Increasing understanding of climate finance in Uzbekistan

On 11-12 May 2017 workshops were organized in the cities of Nukus and Urgench within the framework of joint project of the United Nations Development Programme in Uzbekistan, Center for Hydrometeorological Service under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the UN Environment / UNDP / WRI Green Climate Fund Readiness Programme in Uzbekistan.

The workshops were organized to increase awareness among relevant stakeholders about opportunities to receive financial support from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for national climate-related projects, as well as from other sources of climate financing, and provide a general overview of the the GCF. Over 40 representatives from various ministries and organizations of the Republic of Karaklapakstan and Khorezm region attended the workshops.

The GCF, the world's largest climate fund, was established by 194 governments to limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries, and to help vulnerable societies adapt to the unavoidable impacts of climate change. To date, the Fund has approved 43 projects totaling USD 2.2 billon. Uzbekistan has not yet submitted project proposals to the GCF, but four possible project ideas have now been identified, and will be developed into full-scale project proposals for submission to the GCF.

Workshop participants discussed GCF project proposal procedures. Presenters outlined the criteria that proposals must meet as minimum requirement for consideration. In addition, participants learnt about the role the UN Environment / UNDP / WRI Green Climate Fund Readiness Programme plays in supporting the NDA in Uzbekistan to strengthen its national capacity to plan for, access, manage, deploy and monitor climate financing at the national and subnational levels.

Following on from these events, additional workshops will be held in other regions of Uzbekistan to further raise awareness on existing opportunities for receiving financial support from the GCF.
